The Kuki-Zo Council, representing the Kuki-Zo tribal community in Manipur, has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in resolving the ongoing ethnic crisis. They emphasized the need for protection, security, and a political solution to address the challenges faced by their community. The Council’s Chairman and General Secretary submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister outlining their demands, including a separate administrative arrangement or Union Territory for the Kuki-Zo tribals.
The memorandum highlighted the deepening conflict in Manipur, causing strained relations among the Meitei, Naga, and Kuki-Zo communities. It pointed out the challenges arising from prolonged violence, displacement, and destruction, making peaceful coexistence under the current administrative setup increasingly challenging. The Kuki-Zo people proposed separate administrative structures for the major communities as a pathway to a lasting and peaceful resolution in Manipur.
Stressing the existential threats faced by the Kuki-Zo community, the Council emphasized the necessity of separation from the existing administrative framework for their survival, security, and protection. They disclosed that discussions are underway regarding their demand for a Union Territory with a legislature. Additionally, the Council called for measures such as helicopter services, essential commodity supplies, enhanced security presence along inter-district boundaries, and safer examination centers for Kuki-Zo students.
In a separate move, the Kuki Students’ Organisation urged the immediate release of abducted Kuki-Zo villagers and the termination of the ceasefire agreement with NSCN-IM. They also requested a probe by the National Investigation Agency or Central Bureau of Investigation into the recent killings in Kangpokpi district. Furthermore, various Baptist organizations appealed for the safe release of hostages held by different groups, following incidents of violence in Kangpokpi and Senapati districts.
