A significant amount of firearms and ammunition was discovered in Basanti, South 24 Parganas district, resulting in the apprehension of two local Trinamool Congress officials. The arrested individuals are Shaokat Gayen and Zafar Sheikh.
The Basanti police, along with the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF), collaborated on the search operation that led to the recovery of the firearms. Authorities reported finding 14 long-range firearms and 95 rounds of ammunition in the pond area belonging to Shaokat Gayen.
Rezaul Gayen, son of Shaokat Gayen and a Trinamool Congress candidate, was elected as a panchayat member from Kanthalberia gram panchayat in Basanti. Rezaul Gayen is known to have close ties with local Trinamool leader Raja Gazi.
In a recent development, a person named Ramzan Sheikh was arrested from Charavidya village in Basanti following the recovery of firearms linked to former Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan. Ramzan Sheikh is reportedly associated with former Trinamool MLA Saokat Molla from Canning Purba constituency.
