The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) confiscated significant amounts of Indian currency at the India-Nepal border in Siliguri, West Bengal. The seizure, made in two interceptions on Tuesday, involved individuals attempting to transport the money to Nepal without proper documentation. An Indian and a Nepali citizen were apprehended in connection with the incidents and handed over to the Customs department for legal action.
The first interception occurred during routine checking at the BIT New Bridge, Panitanki, by troops of the 41 Bn SSB Ranidanga around 10.15 a.m. on Tuesday. A man traveling to Nepal was found with Rs 800,000 in Rs 500 currency notes concealed in his luggage. The individual, identified as Bigyan Rai (27) from Nepal, could not account for the large sum of money in his possession.
In a separate incident at around 2.20 p.m. on the same day, the SSB team intercepted a person traveling from India to Nepal in a personal vehicle at the BIT New Bridge, Panitanki. Upon searching the vehicle, they discovered Rs 8,44,500 in Rs 500 currency notes hidden in various compartments. The individual, Sukram Tamang (37) from Sikkim, was taken into custody along with the seized currency and vehicle.
The SSB also seized 543 grams of suspected brown sugar near the border in Bhatgaon during a joint operation with the Bihar Police. Two individuals from Bihar, Md Umar (23) and Md Farukh (46), were arrested in connection with the drug seizure. The SSB officials emphasized their continuous efforts to combat various crimes, including smuggling and trafficking, along the India-Nepal border through intelligence-based operations.
