Legal pressure is increasing on Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee as the Calcutta High Court questioned his reluctance to provide voice samples in connection with a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe. The case stems from allegations that Banerjee made violence-inciting remarks and threats against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a campaign rally linked to the recent West Bengal Assembly elections.
Banerjee is scheduled to appear before the Bidhannagar Court in North 24 Parganas district on Wednesday, where he has been directed to provide his voice samples in the presence of a judicial magistrate and forensic experts. Despite enjoying interim protection from coercive police action until July 31, the court questioned his lack of cooperation with the investigation.
The state government argued that Banerjee’s refusal to provide voice samples hinders the probe’s progress, emphasizing the importance of forensic examination to verify the authenticity of the recorded speech. The court, after hearing both sides, urged Banerjee to cooperate with investigators and provide his voice samples promptly.
