Liam Dawson, the Hampshire and England all-rounder, has announced his retirement from red-ball cricket to extend his career in white-ball cricket. Dawson, aged 36, will continue playing for Hampshire in the T20 Blast and the One-Day Cup. He leaves behind a successful First-Class career spanning nearly two decades, where he excelled as one of Hampshire’s top performers.
Having played over 200 games for Hampshire, Dawson amassed more than 10,000 runs and took over 350 wickets. His consistent performance earned him four Test caps for England, including a memorable unbeaten 66 on debut against India. In a statement released by Hampshire, Dawson expressed pride in his First-Class journey and thanked the fans for their support over the years.
Dawson’s retirement decision comes after a prolific phase in his career, where he scored 1,796 runs and claimed 103 wickets across the 2023 and 2024 County Championship seasons. His exceptional performance in 2024 earned him several accolades, including the PCA Men’s Player of the Year award and recognition as one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year.
Hampshire director of cricket Giles White praised Dawson’s dedication and quality, highlighting his significant contribution to the club. Dawson’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Hampshire’s red-ball history, but his impact in white-ball cricket is set to continue as he remains a vital player for the team.
