Lieutenant General Rajeev Ghai, former Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) during Operation Sindoor, was awarded the prestigious Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal (SYSM) by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. This medal is the highest service decoration for an Indian armed forces officer. Lt Gen Ghai, now serving as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Planning), played a crucial role in planning and executing India’s military actions against Pakistan during Operation Sindoor.
Lt Gen Ghai, one of seven officers to receive the award, assumed the role of DGMO on October 25, 2024, leading the strategic planning that compelled Pakistan to seek a ceasefire on May 10, 2025. With a wealth of experience in conventional and counter-terrorism operations, he has held key positions such as military adviser to the National Security Council Secretariat and various command roles in different sectors of India.
Having a decorated career, Lt Gen Ghai has served in diverse capacities, including commanding infantry battalions and brigades in different sectors. His contributions extend to international service with the United Nations in Lebanon. Commissioned into the Kumaon Regiment and currently serving at the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence, he has been recognized with multiple gallantry awards, including three Sena Medals, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM), and Ati Vishist Seva Medal (AVSM).
