Global football superstar Lionel Messi recently made a memorable visit to Vantara, the wildlife rescue and conservation center founded by Anant Ambani in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The Argentine legend’s trip combined traditional Indian cultural experiences with an up-close look at one of the world’s most advanced animal welfare facilities.
Traditional Welcome for Football Icon

Messi, accompanied by Inter Miami teammates Luis Suarez and Rodrigo De Paul, received a grand traditional welcome featuring vibrant folk music, a ceremonial flower shower, and an aarti ceremony. The football great participated in a Maha Aarti at the temple, which included Ambe Mata Puja, Ganesh Puja, Hanuman Puja, and Shiv Abhishek, offering prayers for world peace and unity.
Guided Tour of Conservation Facility
Following the ceremonial welcome, Messi embarked on an extensive tour of Vantara’s conservation ecosystem. The facility houses rescued big cats, elephants, herbivores, reptiles, and fostered young animals from around the world. He visited the green energy complex and observed operations at what is described as the world’s largest refinery complex.
Close Encounters with Wildlife
At the Big Cat Care Centre, Messi interacted with lions, leopards, and tigers living in naturalistic environments. His tour continued through the Herbivore Care Centre and Reptile Care Centre, where he observed animals receiving specialized veterinary care and customized nutrition programs. He also witnessed clinical and surgical procedures at the multi-specialty wildlife hospital before feeding okapis, rhinos, giraffes, and elephants.
Lion Cub Named After Messi

In a touching gesture, Anant Ambani and Radhika Ambani named a lion cub “Lionel” in honor of the football legend during his visit to the Foster Care Centre, which cares for orphaned and vulnerable young animals.
Memorable Football Moment with Elephant Calf
The visit’s highlight came at the Elephant Care Centre, where Messi met Maniklal, a rescued elephant calf saved from harsh logging industry labor two years ago along with his mother, Prathima. Messi participated in an impromptu football enrichment activity with the young elephant, creating one of the most memorable moments of his India visit.
Messi’s Response to Vantara’s Mission
Speaking in Spanish after the tour, Messi expressed his admiration: “What Vantara does is truly beautiful—the work for animals, the care they receive, the way they are rescued and looked after. It is genuinely impressive. We had a wonderful time, felt completely at ease throughout, and it is an experience that stays with you.”
The football icon, who leads the Leo Messi Foundation dedicated to social causes, education, healthcare, and children’s welfare worldwide, expressed alignment with Vantara’s vision of compassionate, science-driven animal care.
Traditional Closing Ceremony
As the visit concluded, Messi participated in Nariyal Utsarg and Matka Phod, traditional rituals symbolizing goodwill and auspicious beginnings. The ceremony ended with chants for peace and well-being, connecting Vantara’s conservation mission with Messi’s global humanitarian legacy.
The visit showcased how Vantara blends ancient Indian traditions emphasizing reverence for nature with modern, science-driven approaches to wildlife conservation and rehabilitation.
