Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has established Parliamentary Friendship Groups with more than sixty countries to enhance India’s inter-parliamentary connections and supplement traditional diplomacy through ongoing legislative involvement. Members of Parliament from various political parties will lead these groups, showcasing India’s diverse democracy globally.
Key figures like Ravi Shankar Prasad, M Thambidurai, P Chidambaram, and others will head these groups, covering nations such as Sri Lanka, Germany, and the United States in the initial phase. The aim is to facilitate direct lawmaker dialogues, share legislative experiences, discuss trade, technology, and address global challenges faced by democratic societies.
This initiative, building on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s multi-party outreach, seeks to strengthen bilateral relations through regular interactions and joint deliberations. By transcending party lines, it highlights India’s democratic maturity and reinforces Parliament’s role as a crucial connector between nations.
