The Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly saw intense political tensions as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government approved a resolution on women’s reservation during a special session. The day was marked by a walkout from Congress members who accused the government of causing delays in providing actual benefits to women due to procedural issues.
Both political parties held separate meetings to strategize at the start of the day. The Congress party unanimously decided to demand immediate implementation of a thirty-three per cent reservation across all two hundred and thirty Assembly constituencies. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party aimed to introduce a resolution in line with the national women’s empowerment framework.
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav presented the resolution proposing one-third reservation for women in Parliament and state legislative assemblies, contingent on the completion of the delimitation process. This condition sparked a heated debate, with the Opposition arguing that the government’s plan would delay the benefits until 2028 or 2029, urging for immediate action based on current seat allocation.
The treasury benches defended the resolution, emphasizing the need for updating parliamentary seats and citing historical figures like Rani Lakshmibai and Ahilyabai Holkar. Despite strong opposition and Congress members walking out, the government successfully passed the resolution, marking a significant development in the state’s political landscape.
