In a significant move, the Madhya Pradesh cabinet, in a special meeting at Jagdishpur near Bhopal, approved the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill. The venue’s historical significance was highlighted, emphasizing the cultural importance of the decision. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, in a press conference, hailed the move as a tribute to the state’s heritage and a step towards ensuring equality for all citizens.
He connected the decision to the valor and sacrifice of figures like Rani Kamalapati, stressing the law’s alignment with the spirit of sacrifice and national pride. The UCC Bill, according to CM Yadav, upholds citizens’ fundamental rights and aims to provide equal opportunities and rights to all communities. Stressing on equality for all, he mentioned that the law is a significant step in that direction.
Before drafting the Bill, a committee led by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai conducted consultations across all districts and divisions of the state. The consultations involved political parties and social organizations from various faiths, although the Congress party chose not to participate. CM Yadav criticized Congress for its reluctance, citing their historical struggle with the concept of “one nation, one law, one leader.”
Highlighting strong support from the Muslim community, CM Yadav noted that a majority of women and a significant percentage of men favored the implementation of a uniform law. He emphasized that many believed such a law would protect the lives of women. The decision, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a developed India by 2047, reflects the essence of Indian culture, promoting equality, unity, and harmony.
The UCC Bill will now proceed to the upcoming Assembly session, marking a significant stride towards legal uniformity and social justice in Madhya Pradesh.
