Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav released two female cheetahs, CCV-2 and CCV-3, from Botswana into Kuno National Park after completing their quarantine. The cheetahs were set free near the Kuno River in Sheopur district as part of ‘Project Cheetah.’
After the release, Chief Minister Yadav, along with New and Renewable Energy Minister Rakesh Shukla and Madhya Pradesh Forest Development Corporation Chairman Ramniwas Rawat, toured the national park. Yadav expressed that Madhya Pradesh has provided a secure environment for cheetah rehabilitation, becoming a key conservation center in India.
Yadav highlighted the success of the cheetah reintroduction program initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing Madhya Pradesh’s significant progress in this conservation effort. The Botswana cheetahs underwent acclimatization in controlled enclosures before being released into the open forest area.
The addition of these cheetahs has raised the total number of cheetahs in India, including locally born cubs, to 57, with most housed in Kuno National Park. The ambitious ‘Project Cheetah’ by the government aims to revive the endangered species, boost their population, and eventually enable them to roam freely in the wild.
