Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav reaffirmed his government’s dedication to honoring Rani Durgavati, a revered tribal figure, by proposing to rename Jabalpur’s Dumna Airport after her. The announcement came on the anniversary of Rani Durgavati’s sacrifice in 1564 while battling Mughal forces. Chief Minister Yadav expressed his commitment to pursuing this renaming with the Central government, highlighting previous efforts to commemorate the warrior queen’s legacy.
Public Works Department Minister Rakesh Singh raised the issue, noting that the state Assembly had already passed a resolution seeking the airport’s renaming, awaiting approval from the Centre. The proposal has garnered bipartisan support, with demands for swift action to fulfill the longstanding aspiration of the Mahakaushal region. Opposition Leader Umang Singhar questioned the delay in implementing the renaming, urging concrete timelines for the change.
Dumna Airport, a significant aviation hub in Madhya Pradesh, serves the Mahakaushal region and has seen recent expansions to enhance passenger services. The airport, currently operated by the Airports Authority of India, connects Jabalpur with major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. Renaming the airport after Rani Durgavati is seen as a symbolic tribute to her historical significance and courageous resistance against invaders, resonating deeply with the region’s tribal heritage.
