Madhya Pradesh’s Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Hemant Katare, has stepped down from his position, citing family responsibilities and the challenge of balancing his constituency duties. Katare, a Congress MLA representing the Ater seat, submitted his resignation to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee President Jitu Patwari, and Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar.
The resignation, confirmed by Organisation General Secretary Dr. Sanjay Kamle, highlights Katare’s personal constraints that hinder his effective role fulfillment under current circumstances. It is clarified that Katare’s resignation pertains only to his Deputy Leader position and does not impact his membership within the Congress party. Kamle affirmed Katare’s unwavering loyalty to the party.
The decision to accept Katare’s resignation now lies with State Congress President Jitu Patwari and the party’s senior leadership. Katare, son of former Leader of Opposition Satyadev Katare, has been a significant Congress figure in the Gwalior-Chambal region. Elected in the 2023 Assembly polls from Ater, he assumed the Deputy Leader role shortly after, marking a generational shift alongside Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar.
The recent political turmoil within the opposition, characterized by protests and walkouts during Assembly sessions, has not yet seen a replacement named for the Deputy Leader position. Party insiders suggest that the leadership will deliberate on this matter in the upcoming days. Katare’s decision is viewed as a personal choice and not reflective of any internal party discord, as stated by party officials.
Despite attending the ongoing Assembly session until 4 p.m. on Friday, Katare resigned afterward, coinciding with his marriage anniversary celebration.
