Madhya Pradesh’s Dindori district has secured the top rank in water conservation efforts nationwide, with Khandwa district following closely in second place under the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari Abhiyan by the Centre. The rankings, announced by the Jal Shakti Ministry in New Delhi, showcase the state’s exceptional performance on a national scale. Dindori district excelled by constructing over 1.23 lakh water conservation structures, the highest in the country, becoming a role model for community-driven water management.
Khandwa district, with more than 87,000 structures built, significantly contributed to Madhya Pradesh’s overall ranking improvement. This achievement resonates with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on transforming water conservation into a mass movement across the nation. In line with this vision, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s government is executing the “Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan” from March 19 to June 30, 2026, focusing on rainwater harvesting and rejuvenating traditional water sources in rural and urban areas.
The campaign involves the development of various structures like farm ponds, recharge pits, Amrit Sarovars, borewell recharge systems, recharge shafts, and rooftop harvesting systems. Additionally, efforts are underway to rehabilitate reservoirs and traditional water bodies to ensure sustainable water availability. Avi Prasad, the State Level Nodal Officer, mentioned that the Centre is monitoring progress through a real-time dashboard, with over 3.97 lakh water conservation structures already constructed across the state.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav emphasized the importance of public involvement in the success of water conservation initiatives, stating that the campaign is transforming traditional practices into a structured mass movement. The state has set a financial target of approximately Rs 6,278 crore for water conservation projects, with more than 2.44 lakh works identified and projects worth about Rs 6,236 crore currently in progress.
