Madhya Pradesh achieved a significant milestone in India’s renewable energy sector by launching the Jalud Solar Power Plant in Khargone district. Costing Rs 271 crore, this 60-megawatt facility is the country’s initial solar project established through public involvement under the “Green Bond” Scheme. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav hailed the plant as a “national achievement,” commending Madhya Pradesh for introducing a model enabling citizens to invest directly in green energy.
The Jalud plant, situated near Maheshwar, will provide electricity to the Indore Municipal Corporation while curbing carbon emissions. Individuals can acquire up to 10 bonds, each valued at Rs 1 lakh, with an approximate 8% annual return over 20 years. Yadav highlighted that the project’s expenses will be recuperated within a decade, with the subsequent ten years generating pure profit.
Yadav emphasized that this initiative not only ensures affordable electricity but also enables citizens to earn from their homes. Madhya Pradesh, known for offering some of the lowest electricity rates in the nation, even powers Delhi Metro trains. The Chief Minister mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the plant in 2023, showcasing the central government’s backing.
A short film showcasing Madhya Pradesh’s green energy endeavors was screened at the event. Yadav connected the project to the state’s scientific legacy, mentioning the installation of Vedic Clocks in Ujjain and Varanasi, developed with the Department of Science and Technology. He also highlighted the region’s historical significance in philosophical debates and temple construction under Ahilyabai Holkar.
Water Resources Minister Tulsiram Silawat hailed the plant as a “new chapter in Indore’s history,” while Member of Parliament Shankar Lalwani praised India’s leadership in renewable energy. Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav pointed out that the Indore Municipal Corporation became the first urban local body in the country to raise funds through Green Bonds, with contributions from citizens across 28 states.
The project symbolizes collective national engagement in sustainable development, with the Jalud Solar Plant now operational, solidifying Madhya Pradesh’s position as a frontrunner in renewable energy.
