The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has dismissed a criminal case filed by the Trichy City Crime Branch police against Amit Malviya, a senior member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The case was related to a social media post concerning comments made by Udhayanidhi Stalin about Sanatan Dharma.
The complaint, filed by Advocate Dinakaran of the DMK Advocates’ Wing, alleged that a post shared by Malviya on a social media platform had the potential to stoke communal disharmony. This post was in response to remarks made by Udhayanidhi Stalin during a speech in 2023 at a conference organized by the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association.
Udhayanidhi Stalin had compared social evils to diseases that should be eradicated, including making a reference to Sanatan. Malviya shared a video clip of this speech, claiming that Stalin had called for the eradication of Sanatan, leading to allegations of promoting enmity and acts prejudicial to communal harmony.
Amit Malviya challenged the case’s registration, leading to the High Court’s decision to quash the criminal proceedings against him. The court’s ruling brought an end to the legal dispute over the social media post.
