The Madurai Corporation is set to revamp its solid waste management system using technology like artificial intelligence (AI) and GPS monitoring. This initiative aims to enhance cleanliness and efficiency in sanitation services throughout the city. The plan includes identifying areas with chronic garbage dumping, improving supervision of waste management operations, and enhancing the processing of biodegradable waste.
One key aspect of the plan involves using AI to pinpoint locations vulnerable to illegal dumping by analyzing data from CCTV cameras. This will enable swift intervention to prevent waste accumulation in violation of regulations. Additionally, GPS tracking will be introduced for monitoring sanitation workers and waste collection vehicles in real-time, ensuring adherence to designated routes and timely waste disposal.
The Corporation will focus on ten garbage-prone areas in Madurai for intensified monitoring, such as Vandiyur Park badminton point and the Holy Family School area. It also plans to establish five new micro-composting centers to handle biodegradable waste locally, reducing transportation costs and promoting sustainable waste disposal practices.
By implementing these measures, the Corporation aims to streamline waste management operations, reduce illegal dumping, and create a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment.
