Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted Maharashtra’s early adoption of the cooperative movement, empowering farmers through cooperative institutions for nearly a century. He praised the role of cooperative institutions in rural development, citing policy initiatives that boost the sector’s impact. Fadnavis spoke at the Sahakar Gaurav Awards Ceremony, recognizing key contributors to cooperatives on the International Day of Cooperatives.
Maharashtra’s historical commitment to cooperatives was underscored by Fadnavis, noting efforts dating back over 125 years to support farmers. The state boasts a vast network of over two lakh cooperative institutions, reflecting its leadership in the cooperative sector. Fadnavis acknowledged pioneers like Dhananjayrao Gadgil and highlighted the state’s significant cooperative milestones.
Fadnavis commended the Central Government’s efforts in strengthening cooperatives, mentioning the recent establishment of India’s first Ministry of Cooperation. He emphasized the sector’s strategic importance at the national level, with a vision to triple its GDP contribution in the next two decades. The Chief Minister outlined various initiatives aimed at enhancing the cooperative sector’s growth and impact across India.
Referring to the cooperative movement’s resilience, Fadnavis lauded the performance of cooperative banks in Maharashtra. He emphasized their role in financial inclusion and ensuring credit accessibility for all farmers. Fadnavis also highlighted the transformative impact of cooperative housing societies, particularly in Mumbai, where residents are benefiting from redevelopment schemes.
