Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently met with Amazon Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy in Mumbai. They highlighted Maharashtra’s role as India’s technology hub and Amazon’s significant contribution to the state’s digital advancement. Fadnavis praised Amazon’s decision to establish its first Indian cloud infrastructure region in Mumbai in 2016, emphasizing the deepening partnership between Maharashtra and Amazon over the past decade.
The Chief Minister shared updates on projects initiated through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Amazon Web Services (AWS) at Davos in 2025. This collaboration involves an $8.3 billion expansion in Maharashtra, marking Amazon’s largest single-state commitment in India and is expected to create 83,100 jobs. Fadnavis also acknowledged Amazon’s substantial physical infrastructure in the state, including six fulfilment centers and over 200 delivery stations that serve customers both in India and globally.
Furthermore, Fadnavis appreciated Amazon’s environmental initiatives in Maharashtra, such as investing Rs 10 crore in the Vaitarna hydrobasin to replenish water resources and support farmers, planting trees in the Western Ghats, and contributing to the restoration of flamingo habitats around Thane Creek. He expressed eagerness for continued collaboration to enhance these efforts and achieve more significant outcomes for the state’s development.
Amazon’s CEO visit coincides with the company’s strategic moves in the competitive online grocery market in India. Amidst growing competition from local quick-commerce players like Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart, and Flipkart-owned entities, Amazon announced plans to expand its ultra-fast delivery service, Amazon Now, to over 300 cities across the country. This expansion aims to establish the largest “delivery in minutes” network in India.
