Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has taken steps towards administrative austerity by canceling approved foreign tours for state ministers and high-ranking civil servants. This decision aims to cut government spending and support the national fuel-saving campaign by shifting international collaborations to virtual platforms. The move includes stalling upcoming international visits for administrative purposes to ease the financial burden on the state exchequer and demonstrate fiscal discipline to the public.
In response to the directive, State Minister Shambhuraj Desai, responsible for Tourism, Mining, and Women & Child Development, canceled his planned trip to London and Paris. Despite it being a pre-planned family vacation, Minister Desai chose to align with the national focus on fuel conservation and foreign exchange saving, emphasizing a “country first” approach. This decision has garnered praise within political circles for its resonance with the call for austerity.
Following Prime Minister Modi’s appeal for financial prudence, the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly scrapped a scheduled study tour to Japan by MLAs, as confirmed by Speaker Rahul Narwekar. The state government is now emphasizing digital communication, such as video conferencing, for international engagements, marking a strategic shift towards technology-driven interactions over costly physical travel for study purposes. These measures align with the broader call to curtail unnecessary foreign travel and expenses to safeguard foreign exchange reserves amid global economic uncertainties and the West Asia crisis impacting fuel prices and international stability.
