Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated in the State Assembly that there are no intentions to privatise the state-run power distribution utility, Mahavitaran. He defended the distribution franchise model, citing the success of Torrent Power Limited in the Bhiwandi Circle, which improved efficiency without compromising public ownership.
Fadnavis highlighted the positive impact of private franchises on reducing technical and commercial losses in distribution networks. The introduction of Torrent Power as a franchisee significantly decreased distribution leakage, power theft, and billing inefficiencies in the Bhiwandi region.
He assured that Mahavitaran remains a state-managed enterprise and emphasized that localised distribution franchises aim to enhance operational networks and prevent revenue losses, rather than selling state assets. Public-private collaborations under franchising agreements are targeted strategies to ensure reliable power supply and financial savings for the state.
