The Maharashtra state government has established a high-level committee to draft the framework for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed details about the committee’s chairperson and members in the Legislative Assembly. The committee, led by retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Desai, comprises legal experts, educationists, and social workers.

The panel’s primary task is to study the matter and present a comprehensive report within the next six months. The government plans to introduce the UCC bill during the upcoming winter session of the state legislature in Nagpur. The bill will undergo the legislative process for enactment in both Houses.

The committee includes a diverse group of legal, administrative, and social experts, such as retired judges from the Supreme Court and High Courts, a constitutional expert, a former bureaucrat, and notable figures from the social sector. Minister of State (Home) Yogesh Kadam previously informed the state Legislative Assembly about the formation of this committee to facilitate the UCC implementation in Maharashtra.
