The Mahayuti government in Maharashtra has fulfilled its promise by announcing a loan waiver of up to Rs 2 lakh for farmers. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis introduced the ‘Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Shetkari Karjmafi Yojana’ during the state Budget presentation in the Legislative Assembly. Eligible farmers with overdue crop loans as of September 30, 2025, will benefit from this scheme.
An additional incentive grant of up to Rs 50,000 has been declared for farmers who regularly repay their loans. This move is expected to bring significant relief to numerous farmers across the state. The government’s decision comes after a protest in Nagpur in October 2025, led by Bacchu Kadu, demanding a specific date for the waiver’s announcement.
A committee led by Dr. Praveen Pardeshi was established to study the implementation process, and the government has now acted upon the committee’s recommendations. Chief Minister Fadnavis emphasized the government’s focus on long-term measures to prevent farmers from falling back into debt cycles. Efforts are being made to enhance the state’s banking system for improved credit accessibility.
The state aims to boost the agriculture GDP from $55 billion to $500 billion by 2047, with plans to create an integrated value chain for 10 to 15 crops. Various digital platforms like Agristack, Mahavedh, and MahaDBT will be utilized to provide farmers with easier access to services. The government’s initiatives in digital farming and AI are set to revolutionize agricultural practices, benefiting over 30 lakh farmers in Maharashtra.
