The Maharashtra government has given the green light to establish a committee led by a retired High Court judge to assess the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. Minister of State (Home) Yogesh Kadam announced in the state legislative Assembly that the UCC would be enforced following the submission of the committee’s report. Chief Minister Fadnavis has approved the formation of this committee to draft the UCC guidelines.
The decision to pursue the Uniform Civil Code was made in response to concerns raised by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Devyani Farande regarding instances of triple talaq in Nasik district. Farande highlighted the persistence of such cases despite the national ban on Triple Talaq, citing complaints from three Muslim women about threats, violence, and triple talaq from their spouses. She also questioned the government’s stance on polygamy and the potential adoption of UCC in Maharashtra.
In a positive response to Farande’s inquiries, Minister Kadam affirmed the government’s commitment to implementing the UCC, emphasizing that it would apply universally without bias towards any religion. He assured that once the UCC is enacted, measures to prohibit polygamy would be integrated into the code. The government aims to address issues like triple talaq through legal means while upholding the principles of equality and justice for all individuals.
