The Maharashtra government has approved the establishment of a Draft Committee for the ‘Single Women Policy’ to empower single women in the state. This initiative, led by Minister of Women and Child Development Aditi Tatkare, aims to provide better access to government welfare schemes and comprehensive measures for the overall development of single women. Maharashtra is set to be the first state in India to introduce an exclusive policy for single women, recognizing the importance of addressing their specific needs.
The Draft Committee, chaired by the Commissioner of Women and Child Development Commissionerate in Pune, comprises officials and representatives from various departments. Minister Tatkare highlighted that this committee’s formation is a significant step towards fulfilling the vision of late Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who initiated discussions on a policy for single women. The committee includes members from departments such as School Education, Social Justice, Agriculture, and Health, among others, to ensure a holistic approach to the empowerment of single women.
Minister Tatkare expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to draft a comprehensive ‘Single Women Policy’ that will bring about meaningful and long-term changes in the lives of single women in Maharashtra. She emphasized the importance of this initiative, which builds on the groundwork laid by Ajit Pawar and is now being carried forward under the leadership of CM Devendra Fadnavis. The committee’s work is inspired by the vision presented by Ajit Pawar, aiming to make Maharashtra a pioneer in formulating an independent policy for single women.
