The Maharashtra State Disaster Management Department has issued a high-alert warning due to ongoing heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across the state. A red alert has been declared for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts from July 4 to July 6. In addition, moderate to heavy downpours are expected in the ghat areas of Satara, Pune, and Nashik in western Maharashtra during this period.
Local travel disruptions, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and minor structural damage are anticipated, prompting district administrations to take precautionary measures. Palghar district has announced a two-day holiday for schools, colleges, and Anganwadis starting Friday, with residents advised to venture out only for essential purposes.
Following the elevation of Thane district’s alert status from orange to red for July 4 and 5 by the Regional Meteorological Department, classes have been suspended within the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation limits. All schools and colleges, including primary, secondary, and higher secondary institutions under various boards, will remain closed on Saturday, July 4, to ensure student and staff safety.
The heavy rainfall has already impacted infrastructure, with a landslide occurring in the Saptashrungi Gad Ghat area of Nashik. Although no casualties were reported, large boulders and debris obstructed the roadway, briefly halting traffic. Prompt action by local residents and disaster management personnel cleared the debris, restoring vehicular movement swiftly.
Citizens are urged by the state administration to stay vigilant, avoid unnecessary visits to waterlogged areas and ghat sections, and reach out to designated helplines in case of emergencies. Helpline numbers include Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) – 1916, Palghar District Helpline – 02525 297474 / +91 82379 78873, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) – 022-25364779 / 022-25301740 / +91 93723 38827, Thane Disaster Management Cell – 1800-222-108 / 8657887101, and Panvel Municipal Corporation – 022-27458040 / 41 / 42.
