Maharashtra’s Ports and Shipping Minister, Nitesh Rane, stated that the government is committed to safeguarding farmers’ interests amidst disruptions in exports to Gulf nations. Concerns arose as essential commodities like sugar, onions, rice, and grapes faced challenges due to the escalating conflict in West Asia.

Responding to queries in the state assembly about stranded onions and grapes at Navi Mumbai’s port, Minister Rane assured proactive measures to address the situation. The government is closely monitoring developments and maintaining communication with the central authorities to mitigate the impact on farmers.

The conflict in West Asia has led to a halt in grape exports, affecting thousands of tons of produce. Traders are now compelled to sell premium goods like grapes and sugar in local markets at reduced prices due to export route blockages. The disruption also poses risks to Basmati rice exports and the availability of ingredients for traditional festive dishes in Gulf countries during Ramadan.
