In a significant move to promote efficient water management, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced that Maharashtra is set to launch the innovative ‘Water 7/12’ system, akin to the Saatbara land records model. This initiative aims to curb indiscriminate water usage in the state.
Chaired by Minister Bawankule, a high-level meeting with officials from various departments was held to advance the project. The concept of ‘Water Audit’ and ‘Water Balance Sheet’ has been introduced, which will be initially piloted in selected areas.
The state, known for its robust land documentation system, ‘Saatbara’, lacked a similar mechanism for water resources until now. Through systematic water audits, Maharashtra plans to make informed decisions on water usage, emphasizing the need for accurate consumption records.
Aligned with ‘Blue Green Urban Development’ principles, this initiative signifies a significant step towards improved water governance. The ‘Water Accounting Framework’ and ‘Water Balance Sheet’ developed by experts will facilitate transparent tracking of water resources at different levels.
The introduction of ‘Aqua Credits’ under this scheme will incentivize individuals and communities engaged in water conservation efforts. This move aims to promote responsible water usage, especially in rural areas, and establish a sustainable ‘Water Economy’ in Maharashtra, setting a benchmark for the nation.
