Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik emphasized the necessity for all licensed taxi and rickshaw drivers in the state to have a basic understanding of Marathi. Initially set for May 1, 2026, the enforcement deadline might be postponed due to appeals from driver unions.
A significant meeting at Mantralaya, led by Minister Sarnaik and attended by key figures like Sanjay Nirupam and Shashank Rao, discussed the challenges of immediate implementation despite overall support from unions. Requests for extended deadlines ranging from three months to a year were put forth by different representatives.
Minister Sarnaik, while open to providing assistance and additional time, made it clear that compliance with the language mandate is non-negotiable. A gathering of 59 Regional Transport Officers on Tuesday will determine the final timeline, including potential language training and proficiency tests for drivers.
A forthcoming meeting at Parivahan Bhavan will finalize details such as the new mandate’s effective date and the framework for language training. The official announcement of the extended deadline is expected after the Regional Transport Officer briefing.
