As the Mahayuti alliance comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP secured a strong win in the elections for 288 municipal councils and nagar panchayats in Maharashtra, the Janata Dal (United) praised the outcome as a “remarkable performance”.
JD(U) national spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad expressed that the results showcased the increasing public trust in the Mahayuti alliance. He highlighted the alliance’s success in the Assembly elections and anticipated a similar winning streak in the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls.
Responding to the Shiv Sena’s skepticism over the Maharashtra local body poll results, Prasad mentioned that such reactions were common after an electoral setback. He urged introspection into the reasons behind the decline in Shiv Sena’s grassroots support under Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership post Balasaheb Thackeray’s era.
The Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, clinched a significant victory by securing 207 municipal president posts, while the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) managed to win only 44 posts, marking a setback for the alliance.
The outcome reaffirmed the Mahayuti’s dominance in the state following its triumph in the previous year’s Assembly elections. In contrast, the MVA failed to regain voter trust in urban local bodies.
The State Election Commission’s final results revealed that the BJP emerged as the largest party with 117 municipal president posts, followed by Shiv Sena with 53 posts and NCP with 37 posts.
The NCP, a crucial member of the Mahayuti alliance, contested 80 municipal council president seats and secured 37 victories. Notably, in Pune district alone, the party won 10 out of 17 posts of municipal council and nagar panchayat presidents.
Among the Opposition parties, the Congress secured 28 posts, while the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) and Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena won seven and nine posts, respectively.
Out of the total 288 seats, elections were held for 286 seats in two phases on December 2 and December 20, with two municipal councils witnessing uncontested wins.
The results underscore the Mahayuti alliance’s strong influence in Maharashtra’s local body politics, surpassing the MVA in the battle for urban local body control.
