In the tribal regions of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Mallakhamb is transforming lives. Coach Shubham Mair has been pivotal in this change, bringing confidence and hope to children from underprivileged backgrounds.
When Shubham Nair started coaching in the area, he faced a lack of training facilities and equipment. Despite these challenges, the children’s eagerness to learn Mallakhamb was remarkable.
For many children in these communities, Mallakhamb was a new concept. Coming from families with limited resources, the idea of pursuing sports as a career was uncommon. However, a shift occurred when Shubham introduced them to competitive platforms like the Khelo India Youth Games.
Arun Gupta, Joint Secretary of Youth Affairs and Sports in the region, emphasized the importance of tribal sports development. Initiatives like establishing Mallakhamb training centers and supporting athletes from tribal backgrounds have been key priorities.
The support from senior coaches and institutional backing has enhanced training methods and skills for Shubham’s athletes. The participation of these young athletes in events like the Khelo India Beach Games has boosted their confidence and self-belief.
Mallakhamb has become more than just a physical activity for girls like Kavya and Trusha; it symbolizes empowerment and self-assurance. Challenges, such as the lack of female coaches, persist, but efforts are underway to provide equal opportunities for all aspiring athletes.
Despite obstacles, the dedication to nurture talent and provide opportunities remains strong. Coaches and officials are committed to unlocking the potential of these children, believing that with the right guidance, they can achieve great heights.
