Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of Trinamool Congress led a candlelight protest in Kolkata against the alleged rape and murder incident in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district. Despite police attempts to stop the procession, it moved forward, emphasizing the demand for ‘Justice for Baruipur’. Women leaders from Trinamool Congress, including Dola Sen, Pratima Mandal, and Aparupa Poddar, participated in the protest with placards and candles.
A significant police presence was observed to manage the situation as the procession progressed from Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat. The protest, which aimed to raise awareness about the Baruipur incident, faced some tension but did not escalate further. The procession concluded at Mamata’s house without any address to party workers or the media.
The Baruipur incident, involving allegations of rape and murder of a minor, led to a tense situation in the area. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari engaged with the victim’s family, and swift police action resulted in the arrest of three individuals, including the main suspect, with three others detained. Mamata Banerjee, expressing her concern, conducted a candlelight march after a Trinamool delegation visited Baruipur and briefed her on the situation.
