Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee showed her backing for the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) cause in Delhi and checked on the well-being of activist Sonam Wangchuk via phone. She stood in solidarity with the movement advocating for student justice.
Abhijeet Dipke, the CJP’s founder, appreciated Banerjee’s support and thanked her on social media. Banerjee conversed with Wangchuk to inquire about his health and encouraged him to remain resilient. She also expressed her support for CJP’s efforts for student justice.
The CJP initiated a campaign at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on June 20, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following the NEET paper leak controversy. Wangchuk, a key figure in the movement, warned of a hunger strike if the government failed to act positively by June 27. Subsequently, he commenced his fast on June 28 due to the lack of response from the Centre.
As Wangchuk’s health deteriorated, appeals emerged for him to end his indefinite fast. He has been fasting in central Delhi alongside Dipke, who is staging a protest at Jantar Mantar, urging Pradhan to step down over the May leaks that impacted numerous students.
Banerjee, who undertook a 26-day hunger strike during the Singur anti-land acquisition movement in 2008, extended her support to Wangchuk and Dipke’s cause on Tuesday.
