A man has been arrested in Kolkata for allegedly defrauding individuals by falsely promising them flats and land in New Town and Salt Lake, totaling around Rs 70 lakh. The arrest took place at Amherst Street in north Kolkata by Bidhannagar North Police Station personnel. The accused, identified as Robin Dutta, is said to have taken large sums of money from multiple people with the assurance of providing properties in the mentioned areas.
Police reported that Dutta allegedly received Rs 54 lakh from Ashish Biswas for land in Salt Lake and Rs 16 lakh from Sonali Mukherjee for a flat and land in New Town, none of which materialized. Consequently, both victims filed complaints against Dutta. They also claimed that despite previous complaints during the Trinamool Congress government, no action was taken until they approached state Health Minister and Bidhannagar MLA Sharadwat Mukherjee.
Following public complaints, the police are investigating whether Dutta acted alone or had accomplices in the purported scam. Notably, this is not the first instance of the Health Minister intervening in response to public grievances. In a recent incident, his involvement led to the discovery of contraceptives, a bed, and a dressing table inside a ward office of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, previously locked since the state Assembly election results.
