A 47-year-old man was swiftly arrested within 36 hours for allegedly stealing Rs 3.85 lakh from a shop in Chawri Bazar, Delhi, where he was employed. The theft was reported on April 29 at Hauz Qazi Police Station. The complainant, who runs Shyam Sweets in Chawri Bazar, filed an e-FIR under Section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The incident occurred on April 28 around 9:00 P.M. when the complainant left the shop, instructing his manager and helper, identified as Sanjay, to close by 10:00 P.M. However, the helper took the keys later that night, reopened the shop, and fled with Rs 3,85,000 from the cash box. CCTV footage confirmed the theft.
A police team led by ASI Pankaj, Head Constable Manoj, and Head Constable Ravi, under the supervision of the SHO of PS Hauz Qazi and ACP of Kamla Market, worked to apprehend the accused. Despite the accused’s attempts to evade arrest by changing locations, he was tracked to Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, and successfully caught.
The accused, identified as Sanjay Sharma from Gwalior, confessed during interrogation that he stole the money after recently joining the shop as a helper. He had been intermittently working at sweet shops in Delhi for 12 to 13 years and had briefly worked at the same shop during Diwali.
