A man named Basappa was brutally hacked to death in Hoolikatti village near Saundatti taluk of Belagavi district, Karnataka. The accused, Irayya, attacked Basappa more than 16 times with a machete, reportedly due to a personal grudge dating back to 2015 when Basappa allegedly eloped with Irayya’s mother. Irayya had been searching for Basappa and his mother for years and allegedly waited for Basappa near Hoolikatti village.
The incident occurred on Monday night when Basappa arrived on his motorcycle and was ambushed by Irayya. The accused then alerted the police himself and was taken into custody at the scene. Basappa’s body was moved to the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences for a postmortem examination. A case has been filed at the Saundatti police station, and investigations are ongoing.
In a separate incident on February 2, Davanagere district police arrested a woman and her lover for abetment to suicide. The woman, Saraswati, had eloped with her lover, Kumar, leading her husband, Harish, to take his own life. Harish, who had married Saraswati three months prior, hanged himself after her elopement despite the family finding her shortly after. He left a note alleging harassment and threats following the incident.
