A 60-year-old man, Sultan Sardar, passed away on Thursday due to a heart attack, shortly after attending a hearing related to the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process on December 27, 2025. The incident occurred in the Swarupnagar area of North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. Sultan, a long-time resident, was not listed in the 2002 voter list of West Bengal.
Family sources revealed that Sultan had received a summons to participate in the SIR process and attended a hearing at the Swarupnagar Block Development Office on December 27. Officials reportedly pointed out discrepancies in his documents during the hearing, causing him distress. Sultan’s family mentioned that he had been suffering from severe anxiety since the hearing, which ultimately led to his heart attack and subsequent demise.
Sultan’s wife shared that he was a migrant laborer in 2002 during the previous SIR exercise in the state, which led to his name exclusion from the voter list despite his parents being listed. His son blamed the SIR process for his father’s death, urging for its immediate halt. Local police are investigating the matter, although no formal complaint has been filed yet.
