A 37-year-old man, Sanal Kumar, passed away in Kannur due to suspected sunstroke while working on digging a well. The incident occurred during a period of intense heat in Kerala, prompting a heat wave alert in certain districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued warnings for Palakkad, Kollam, and Thrissur as temperatures soared above 40 degrees Celsius.
Authorities have emphasized the need for increased caution across all regions in light of the escalating temperatures. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has advised strict safety measures to mitigate health risks posed by the extreme heat. Sirens were sounded in Kollam and Palakkad districts to raise public awareness and readiness in response to the heat wave alert.
The coastal geography of Kerala, combined with high humidity levels, has exacerbated the heat index, making outdoor activities more perilous. The IMD may declare official heat wave conditions if the current weather pattern persists for two consecutive days. Until then, it is crucial for individuals, especially vulnerable groups, to stay hydrated, limit sun exposure, and follow safety guidelines.
The Kerala Health Department remains on high alert and has issued specific directives to manage the situation effectively.
