A man in his 40s is currently evading authorities after assaulting two high school students with a hammer and spraying an unknown substance at police officers in Tokyo. The incident occurred in Fussa, a suburb of western Tokyo, around 7:20 am local time. One student was injured in the face, while the other suffered a shoulder injury during the attack.
The man’s actions were reportedly triggered when his mother cautioned a group of students to keep quiet on the street, but they ignored her warning. Witnesses in a residential area near JR Fussa Station alerted the police after seeing the man wielding a hammer and attacking someone. Upon police arrival, the man brandished a knife and sprayed the officers with the unknown substance, causing injuries to three officers.
Following the confrontation, the man retreated to his residence, prompting a police search operation. Despite storming the house, law enforcement only discovered a hammer, knife, and spray, with the man nowhere to be found. Surveillance footage revealed that he escaped through a rear exit after the altercation. Although the injuries sustained were non-fatal, the police are actively pursuing the man on charges of attempted murder.
In a separate incident earlier this year in Osaka, a 17-year-old boy lost his life, and two others were wounded in a stabbing incident. The attack took place in Osaka’s Dotombori shopping area, where the perpetrator, a young man in his 20s, allegedly knew the victims and engaged in a dispute before the violent episode. The deceased victim succumbed to stab wounds, while the injured teenagers were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
