A man convicted in the 1994 murder of an Ahmedabad cloth merchant, who had been on the run for over 13 years, has been apprehended by the city Crime Branch. The accused, known by various aliases, had evaded authorities since 2013 after not returning to prison following a parole period.
Officials disclosed that the convict had been using fake identities and frequently changing residences to avoid capture for more than a decade. He was convicted in a case related to the murder and robbery of a cloth merchant in 1994, which led to his death sentence in 2000 for multiple criminal offenses.
The victim was lured to a hotel under the guise of a business deal, where he was robbed and killed. The convict then attempted to conceal the crime by severing the victim’s head. Despite being granted temporary release on parole, the convict violated its terms in 2013 and went into hiding, managing to elude authorities by constantly changing locations and identities.
A specialized tracking team was formed to locate the fugitive, employing intelligence gathering, surveillance, and ground operations. After a targeted operation, the convict was arrested without resistance, ending his 13-year evasion of law enforcement. Legal procedures have been completed, and he is set to return to judicial custody for the execution of his sentence.
