Mangaluru police apprehended a Youth Congress official and his accomplice for allegedly extorting Rs 2.77 crore from a businessman through blackmail over nearly two years. The suspects, identified as Nizam, the General Secretary of Mangaluru Youth Congress, and his associate Jitesh, reportedly used private compromising materials to coerce the victim.
Jitesh initiated contact with the businessman in 2024 and coerced him by threatening to reveal the sensitive content to his spouse. Initially demanding Rs 35 lakh, the victim paid out of fear. Subsequently, the victim sought help from Nizam, who allegedly colluded with Jitesh, escalating the extortion.
The accused concocted a false suicide narrative to intimidate the victim further. Nizam falsely claimed Jitesh’s suicide, circulating fake death photos and funeral images to pressure the victim. The businessman, fearing legal repercussions and disgrace, succumbed to the demands, resulting in a total extortion amount of Rs 2.77 crore from 2024 to 2026.
The case unraveled in June 2026 when the businessman discovered Jitesh alive, prompting him to report the incident to Urva Police Station. Both culprits were arrested based on the complaint, with ongoing investigations to uncover the full extent of the extortion ring and potential accomplices.
