Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh restated his government’s dedication to combating the drug issue through coordinated efforts. He emphasized the importance of a comprehensive strategy involving enforcement and intelligence-based operations in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse. The state’s focus includes strengthening intelligence gathering and enhancing coordination among various agencies to enforce anti-narcotics laws effectively.
Manipur and Mizoram have become significant drug trafficking routes in the Northeast due to their porous borders with Myanmar, a key area for illicit narcotics production. The unfenced international borders make these regions susceptible to cross-border smuggling activities. Five districts in Manipur share a 398-km border with Myanmar, while Mizoram shares borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, making them prone to transnational drug trafficking.
Law enforcement agencies have identified drug trafficking networks operating between Manipur, Mizoram, and southern Assam. Smugglers use clandestine routes to transport narcotics across state borders, evading security measures. Recently, Mizoram Police arrested alleged drug peddlers and seized a substantial amount of heroin valued at over Rs 7.40 crore in the illegal market.
Manipur’s Director General of Police, Mukesh Singh, has been actively overseeing anti-narcotics operations across the state. He has been emphasizing intelligence-based actions and urging district police officials to intensify efforts against drug trafficking and smuggling networks. Singh has also called for support from Civil Society Organizations to raise public awareness and combat drug abuse effectively.
