Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has announced a budgetary provision of Rs 350 crore in the upcoming state budget to aid women impacted by recent ethnic violence. This allocation aims to support approximately 3.5 lakh women affected by the unrest in Manipur. The announcement was made during the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration at the City Convention Centre in Imphal, themed “Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls.”

Singh, addressing the gathering, expressed hope that those displaced by the crisis in Manipur could soon return home. He praised the resilience of Manipuri women, highlighting their significant contributions to the state’s economy and various social movements throughout history. The Chief Minister acknowledged the sacrifices made by women, particularly widowed mothers who have overcome hardships to raise successful individuals.

MLA Sagolshem Kebi Devi emphasized the importance of women being informed about government welfare schemes and their constitutional rights to combat discrimination. She encouraged increased female participation in such initiatives. Manipur Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel underscored the essential role of women in society, stating that they have always been the pillars of strength in Manipur.

During the event, an audio-visual presentation on Mission Shakti, focusing on women’s safety, security, and economic empowerment, was showcased. Chief Minister Singh honored Nameirakpam Kunjarani Devi, a weightlifter and Padma Shri awardee, and Mangka Mayanglambam, a renowned Manipuri folk singer. The program, organized by the Department of Social Welfare, was attended by various dignitaries, including Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh and Tourism Minister Khuraijam Loken Singh.

The Budget session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly is set to resume on March 9, with discussions on crucial issues expected to take place. The session, comprising seven sittings until March 17, will likely see Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh presenting the state budget for the 2026-27 financial year on the opening day.
