Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh expressed optimism after a productive meeting with Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) representatives in Guwahati. This interaction, the first in nearly three years, signifies a crucial step towards peace and trust-building between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. Singh emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogues to maintain stability in Manipur and foster harmony among different groups.
The Chief Minister thanked the KZC delegation for engaging in discussions aimed at promoting peace and unity in the state. Since taking office on February 4, Singh has consistently urged all parties to prioritize peace efforts, emphasizing the need for reconciliation and cooperation. Addressing concerns about demands for a separate administration for Kuki-Zo tribals, Singh reiterated the Central government’s stance on preserving Manipur’s territorial integrity.
During the meeting, which lasted about one hour and 45 minutes, the KZC delegation highlighted key issues, including the urgency to ease tensions between various communities and ensure justice for conflict victims. They stressed the significance of upholding the buffer zone until a comprehensive political resolution is achieved. The KZC also called for expediting Suspension of Operations (SoO) talks to establish lasting peace in the region.
In response, the Chief Minister acknowledged these concerns, outlining his administration’s efforts to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur. He commended the KZC for initiating dialogue during challenging times and expressed his commitment to ongoing peace-building initiatives. Although the meeting concluded without formal agreements, both parties viewed it as a positive step towards conflict resolution.
