In a move to foster unity in Manipur, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has pledged to safeguard individuals from the Kuki-Zo community during their visits to Imphal, including for medical purposes. Security measures will be in place for those traveling from the Kuki-Zo-dominated hill districts to the state capital. This initiative comes in the wake of ethnic tensions that have led to a divide between the Imphal Valley region and the Kuki-Zo-inhabited areas.
The assurance was made as the Chief Minister inaugurated the enhancement of the Imphal-Kakching Lamkhai section of National Highway-137A. Efforts are being made to facilitate safe travel for Kuki-Zo community members, aiming to bridge the gap caused by security concerns following past conflicts. The state government’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of all residents is highlighted through this proactive step.
With the recent formation of the Manipur government, Kuki-Zo MLAs have made significant appearances in Imphal, signaling a potential shift towards reconciliation. Despite some opposition from Kuki-Zo organizations regarding their involvement, the MLAs have taken part in governmental proceedings. The government’s focus on infrastructural development and peace-building efforts reflects a broader commitment to fostering harmony and progress in the region.
