Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met with Naga community leaders to discuss the ongoing intensive combing operations by state police and CRPF to locate missing villagers. Urging for calm, the Chief Minister assured that the government is striving to ease tensions and restore peace in the hill areas. He called for unity among communities to help bring back normalcy and harmony in the state.
More than 40 individuals from Kuki and Naga communities were held captive in Kangpokpi and Senapati districts after an incident on May 13. Following collaborative efforts by authorities, community leaders, and Civil Society Organisations, 30 hostages were released on May 14 and 15.
During the meeting, a delegation from the Liangmai Naga Council and Liangmai Naga Women Union pressed for the immediate release of missing individuals, including a pastor, allegedly abducted on May 13. They emphasized the importance of returning the bodies of any deceased hostages to their families for proper last rites.
Expressing concerns for the safety of Liangmai villages, tribal leaders requested increased police presence in vulnerable areas of Kangpokpi district. The Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur (LNC), along with other organizations, presented a memorandum to the Chief Minister outlining their grievances and requests.
