Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has called for peace and urged all groups to avoid violence during protests in Kuki-Zo tribal areas of the state. The appeal follows demonstrations by Kuki-Zo organizations in Churachandpur and other hill districts against the involvement of MLAs from their community in the state government.
After a Cabinet meeting to assess the situation, CM Singh took to social media to emphasize the need for calm and adherence to the law. Normal life in Churachandpur was disrupted as tribal groups enforced a 24-hour shutdown in protest against the role of Kuki-Zo MLAs in government formation.
Protests and roadblocks were reported in various districts, with agitators halting vehicles in Churachandpur. The shutdown, led by Kuki tribal organizations, led to the closure of offices, shops, and schools, with heightened security measures in place to maintain order.
The unrest escalated with clashes between protesters and security forces, resulting in injuries and the deployment of additional security personnel. The tension arose following the involvement of Kuki-Zo MLAs in the new government, sparking demonstrations and calls for their exclusion from the process.
