The officials attended the Trophy Showcase Ceremony of the 135th Durand Cup 2026 in Imphal.
The Governor praised Manipur as a leading football nursery, with players bringing laurels to the state and country. He stressed the government’s support for sports infrastructure to nurture talent. Chief Minister Singh underlined football’s cultural significance in Manipur and the government’s commitment to promoting sports.
The event showcased iconic trophies like the President’s Cup, Durand Cup, and Simla Trophy. The Governor described the Durand Cup as a celebration of history and unity through sports. He expressed confidence in the tournament fostering discipline and teamwork among young footballers.
Governor Bhalla believed the Durand Cup’s return to Imphal would enhance unity and socio-economic development. He acknowledged the Indian Armed Forces for organizing the tournament, promoting peace through sports. Chief Minister Singh thanked the forces for their efforts and highlighted the tournament’s benefits for sports infrastructure and local footballers.
The Governor also attended the Governor’s Taekwondo Cup closing ceremony, promoting discipline and sportsmanship. He praised Manipur’s sporting legacy and the efforts of sports associations in nurturing talent. The Durand Cup, established in 1888, remains Asia’s oldest football tournament, with Imphal hosting Group D matches from July 28 to August 12, 2026.
