Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla honored the late BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte by laying a wreath and a shawl at his residence in Churachandpur district. Valte, a 62-year-old tribal leader from the Zomi community, passed away on February 21 in a Gurugram hospital. He represented the Thanlon constituency in the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Governor Bhalla extended his condolences to Valte’s family, expressing deep sympathy and praying for the departed soul’s eternal peace. Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh also paid tribute to Valte by laying a wreath and a shawl as a mark of respect. Valte’s body was transported to Churachandpur after being brought to Lengpui Airport in Aizawl, Mizoram.
The Zomi Council Chairman, Vumsuan Naulak, announced that the burial date for Valte would be communicated later. A shutdown was observed in Churachandpur district to mourn Valte’s demise, with the Manipur government declaring a three-day state mourning period. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited the Gurugram hospital to pay his respects to the late legislator.
Valte, who had been residing in Churachandpur district following medical treatment in Delhi, succumbed to his deteriorating health on February 21. He was airlifted to Gurugram for advanced medical care after being attacked during ethnic violence in Imphal in 2023. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Governor Bhalla, Chief Minister Singh, and other leaders expressed profound sorrow over Valte’s passing.
Valte, who had advocated for unity within the Zo community amidst Manipur’s ethnic crisis, was attacked in Imphal in 2023, resulting in severe injuries and paralysis. His driver lost his life in the assault.
