The Manipuri film ‘Boong’ made history by clinching the Best Children and Family Film award at the 2026 BAFTA Awards. This achievement has garnered praise from West Bengal’s Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, who congratulated the cast and crew for their remarkable feat. Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, ‘Boong’ is a coming-of-age story that follows a young boy’s emotional journey to find his missing father amidst social and political turmoil in Manipur.
The film, produced by Excel Entertainment and helmed by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival before winning the prestigious BAFTA award. Director Devi used the platform to advocate for peace and representation for her homeland during her acceptance speech. This recognition marks a significant milestone for Indian cinema, as ‘Boong’ became the first Indian production to triumph in the Best Children and Family Film category at the BAFTAs.
Following a period of President’s Rule, Manipur’s current government, led by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, took office on February 4, 2026, with a focus on restoring stability and building community trust.
